...and some

My own version of bulanglang (Batangas style) with whatever veggies I had on hand, and using water, fresh lemon juice, tomatoes, garlic and onion as the broth base. Yeah, you got to love your veggies to be able to enjoy this one.

"Yum, ginataan!"
seems to be what I always hear when this sweet medley of good things is served at Filipino gatherings. You should have seen how Aliyah's face lit up when I mentioned that I would like to make ginataan at home. We bought plantain to use here, but they are still so green and Aliyah, in her eagerness, convinced me that this ginataan would be good without that.
She made the white balls from glutinous rice flour dough. As the coconut milk boiled, we added cubed yam and sugar. After 5 minutes we added jackfruits and the dough balls. Once the balls rose to the surface, we turned the heat off and enjoyed this goodness.

Okay, don't let the color and texture gross you out! I just want to show you how the pichi pichi looked like after steaming it for half an hour or so. The final product looks much better, though I must admit I have never seen green pichi pichi before! It has to be the pandan water that I used instead of good ol' plain H2O.
It turned out really good. It actually tasted better than the ones that inspired me to try making it, but I must admit that I still need some hands-on coaching.

Kai, I LOVE this!! All of these dishes are completely new/foreign to me, and I am so impressed by how you are finding ways to veganize them. The ginataan is of particular interest... I guess it normally has plaintain? Wow, and it is SO precious that your girls are joining and learning. Beautiful memories! :)

Kai, you are amazing and I love how you are making foods that some I've never seen before. Would you mind posting some recipes or at least ingredients? I'm really interested and I love learned of food from other cultures and countries. Thanks for sharing, and your kids must be having fun in the kitchen with you!

Thanks Dreena, and yes, more of kids in the kitchen to come.

The plantain is really good in the ginataan and it usually has more than one kind of root crops, like sweet potatoes. I just happen to only have yam.

Leslie, thanks.
The kids have fun in the kitchen, but cleaning up is a different story.

Here's where I got the recipes.

Not very clear, and I found myself using a LOT LESS sugar than called for. The water-flour ratio was also goofy so adjustments had to be made.

Believe it or not, the ingredients used (and instructions) are listed in my posts. I will work on a better one though and post them all at once:)

Hey Kai, I forgot to mention in my comment back to you (on my page) that we should do a code for MM with organic stuff. I just have 'O' on my receipts stating organic. Or we can do an "or" or even a symbol or something. My favorite is this *.

Which ever we each choose, we should talk with Harmonia about this one.

Hola, mi amiga,Johana:)

Aside from running errands, I'm meeting with a friend this morning, then to swimming lesson in the afternoon, so I'll be away from the computer pretty much during the day but I am planning to blog about this, hopefully late afternoon or tonight.

Can you tell me more about where you live? For example, do you have easy access to a public library, and do they have books about nutrition, veganism, vegetarianism, etc? What kind of fruits/veggies are most abundant? When you say rice, do you mean white? Would your kid eat beans if they're sweetened?

Anyway, I have to go now, but I will get back with you later, for sure. Say, do you have a blog?

hi again:
i live in Puerto Rico, in the west part of the island, our public books library is nothing like in usa here in my town we have one and is really not good in books the vegetarian/vegan section is none. our librarys are not close to any american ones. bad for me i love to read.

the supermarkets i have available dont sell normally organic stuffs, very rare to find products there. i have access to 2 heathfoods stores. they dont offer to much variety and the prices are high. we live in one income and a litle tight, so i but the lest expensive in the heathfood but always trying to buy the best for us. i cant but the mocks meats, and such products, to expensives.

the good thing is that i can find locally organic and are the most abundant:
oranges, mangoes, avocados, lettuce, cilantro, peppers, yucca and other like yams.. okra, tangerines, lemons, plantains. i know is more but this is the idea.

my girl love white rice, i make brown too, but she dont like it as love white. i can make her eat rice with beans (mainly the staple in P.R.. she will eat some brocoli if i push a litle, and some other americans veggies. but she is lately refusing to eat fruits :(
she dont like to drink any nut milk that i found here, we dont have many choices, but i already put some in her cereal and oatmeal and was not so bad. also she hate smoothies( i think she is litle weird sometimes).

i think that maybe you cna help me in making her eat better and eating fruits. sometimes i feel so dumb becouse she is always refusing to eat my food but not refuse the junk.

i dont have a blog, i may start one of the vegan puertorican food i do, but im afraid my english will not be good. i have a e-mail addy, but i dont know if is safe to put it here, how can i give it to you?

hope you have a good day,
johana

What? A kid who doesn't like smoothies?

Hi again, Johana:)

As I was thinking about this earlier, it came to me that this is a little complicated because of other family members feeding her body with not so healthy food and her mind with a different view of food than yours. I strongly feel that this needs to be addressed first.

Also, if she really likes eating rice and canned corn, then maybe try putting that in soup- with potatoes, beans, other veggies (even milk). Would that work?

Otherwise, I won't even have the canned corn around the house. KIDS WILL EAT WHATEVER IS AVAILABLE WHEN TRUE HUNGER OCCURS. If the only things you have around are healthy food, she will eat that. Don't give up right away. (But then again, that's tough when there are other people sneaking food on her.)

If your daughter is eating some veggies, I wouldn't push the fruit issue. Kids at that age usually have a very narrow list of things they would eat.

My kids also have a short list of veggies and fruits they would eat, but that's okay. Forcing them might just lead them to dislike those food even more. The best thing we could do is be a good example and model to them.

I could perfectly understand your English. That's also my 2nd language, the first is Filipino. If you have a blog, other people could visit it and offer some advice or encouragement. I know I could learn from you too... so much diversity. And I'd love to learn more of PR!

I will post my email address for you in the following comment so that I could delete that later on.
