These Pigs are not in a Blanket...

When vegan twinkies were featured at the Vegan Lunch Box, some bloggers started seaching for this Twinkies bake set, and that included me. But it was not available in any local store I called or checked out, nor was I willing to pay half its price in shipping if ordered online.
Now that the Twinkies pan rage is over, guess what I found at the Kitchen Collection store at the outlet mall that we went to yesterday? Yes, a Hostess Twinkies baking set, for $14.99- How cool is that?

The drive home was a different story. I call it the "end of the holiday weekend major freeway traffic." I really don't mind those as long as we aren't late for anything, and as long as Ron is driving and I have books with me. We had to drive side by side with a trailer full of pigs for a few miles. This must be the first time that three year old Zurielle had seen "prison-on-wheels" full of animals. She asked, "Mommy, why are the pigs stuck?"
The conversation went on. But of course, this is the same girl who the other day I had to explain the whole sewage system to, bacause she doesn't stop at one question. She has many why's.
So now, she knows about the bacon, the porkchops and the ham. By the end of the conversation, mommy was teary eyed. I'm telling you, this girl is something else...

I had a $10 coupon for $50 purchase from the store I mentioned above, and since I don't own a waffle iron, I decided to get one. I used Susan's recipe here, and everybody thought the waffles were the best. I had to make 2 batches and couldn't keep up! At least I was able to take a photo of the last one made!
Here I used whole wheat pastry flour, way less salt than called for, and 1 T ground flaxseeds instead of the egg replacer.
Hearts to the waffles!

I'm jealous of your waffle iron! I only ever get to eat waffles when I go out to eat, and I bet anything they have eggs and dairy in them.

Your strawberry garnish is very, very cute!

We used to live in Iowa, the home of the commerical pig farms. It was unreal how many huge semis loaded with those poor souls used to drive through out town, to the slaughterhouse in Ottumwa, Iowa. When my kids asked I told them the truth and one day my 3 year old saw a huge semi full of pigs and he got this sad face and said, "Poor pigs, going to Ottumwa, gonna get killed."

It is just so sad and so wrong and I don't understand how people can eat animals. I never could and never will.

I still don't have a waffle iron, so you're doing better than I am! I resist getting one because I know I'd eat too many waffles if I had one.

I'm so glad you liked the pancake recipe! I knew that it was supposed to work for waffles, but I'm glad to hear that you've tested it. :-)

And I HATE seeing those prisons-on-wheels. My daughter's like yours--lots of questions until she gets the whole story.

Awwwwwwww... Zurielle! I know the horror and sadness for YOU, Kai, to have to explain the truly unexplainable...

Even the way she asked you broke my heart, what a sweet little girl. I am so thankful she has YOU for her friend, her protector, her question answerer, and for all the myriad other MOMMY things, Kai.

It is so hard to see our fellow living creatures being "transported" this way, as you are well aware.

*sigh*

Your girls are special ones, to be sure!

I was thinkin' about getting one of those Twinkies pans when the price was more accessible for me. Thank you for the head's up, Kai.

May you have a blessed week!

I have yet to have that conversation with my four-year-old. He tends to get a bit obsessive about things. We have already had the McDonald's talk and now he constantly asks me if people who eat McDonald's are bad, and "why do people eat McDonalds if they know it is bad for them?" I also get "Why do people who eat McDonald's want to die?" And bless his heart, he is still concerned about the people who affected by hurricane Katrina. He asks about the children's toys. We talk a little about food and animals, but my husband is an omni and sometimes gives me dirty looks when I give too much info at the dinner table.

Kai
that is a heart breaking story. But if I was you, I would feel better knowing that I was raising my children to see the truth. You're doing such a great job with them. : )
Aww I love the kid stories.
Keep 'em comming hehe

I too think it's better to raise children who know the truth and are not afraid to ask questions as well as hear the answers. This makes for many of the good people in the world.

Don't get me started on wanting a waffle iron. I haven't had a waffle in over 10 years!

first those berries looks so so god, the waffles too, i want too the twinkie set, but they dont have it here in any stores i search and search and not luck, and the shipping online was too much for here, so congrats in your new toys :)!

for me explain to Ana why her grandma and other family eat meat is so difficult she ask me why they want to harm they bodies and die and other things i must say that explain it to my girls is so difficult she is ever asking such a difficult questions, so i understand your experience.

another theme :
your photos make me hungry ;)

have a god night,
J.

Zurielle sure is a smart girl. It must be tough to have that conversation about where the piggies in the truck are going.
