Twin Cities Buzzing
My husband was telling me of this place in Minneapolis that he had just read about in the online paper yesterday. He was curious to check it out, and so was I when he told me about it.
This is the Midtown Global Market at the old Sears building on Lake and Chicago. Awesome is what they have done to this place! We're talking about an open area with 60 vendors of produce, hot food, grocery, and unique items. They won't have a grand opening until the first week of June, and actually only a part of it is open now, but it is still worth a visit if you are in the Twin Cities.
The Produce Exchange is situated right in the middle of it all. They have all kinds of organic fruits and veggies so Aliyah was thrilled about that. The guy at the counter told me that they are a local produce wholesaler and that this is their first retail store ever. I got a 15% discount on my purchase, but with a 3 year old crying on my shoulder because she couldn't get that $8 bag of candy, I wasn't able to ask what the discount was for.
We got a Vegetarian combo at the Holy Land deli, and for less than $9 we got falafel, salad, dolmas, spinach pie, and lots of rice. They should have lunch buffet on the weekdays too, but this I am not sure if available yet.The stores are giving away canvas bags for purchases of $10 or more. We got 2. So what are you waiting for? Go check it out!
Also, Trader Joe's is now open in St Louis Park. At long last...

Wow! That place sounds awesome. The best thing I have close to me is the farmer's market in the spring/summer/fall months or Whole Foods. I've never even seen a Trader Joe's. I don't even know if they are in Canada. I keep hearing about it and I'm intrigued. Is it like a Whole Foods?
I agree with Carrie, sounds so fantastic. I love the variety available and that so much is accessible in one close place.
TRADER JOE'S! This is one of my fave stores... I buy a lot of stuff there. Carrie, it is like Whole Foods but the prices are better. There is less variety but you can still find almost everything you need. Kai, have fun shopping!!!
Thanks K!
Carrie, here's from the local paper:
Whole Foods spendthrifts used to paying their "whole paycheck" for tasty organic and minimally processed foods will find Trader Joe's a budget respite. The two are clear competitors: Whole Foods introduced its low-cost "365" store brand nationwide in 1997 to go head-to-head with Trader Joe's.
Better yet, here's the link to the write-up.

Also, at the Global Market, I paid $1.99/lb for organic tomatoes whereas I paid $3.99 at Whole Foods the same day.
That bass player looks like my boyfriend in 10 years! aaahhh. Great post!
Lake and Chicago? I'm there! That place sounds awesome!
What did you think of your food at Holy Land?
I drove past Trader Joe's (on my way to Byerly's today, with the little boy in tow,) and saw the giant "NOW OPEN" sign! Hooray! I'll have to go check things out soon enough. Is it IKEA-crazy there?
Leslie, no wonder that guy looks familiar! jk.
Catherine, TJ was crowded, but I won't compare it to IKEA. Um, maybe to IKEA's elevator (size-wise).
The shelves were half empty. The bottled dressings were wiped out.
Holy Land's food is awesome as ever, dh likes it too. I buy their pita, sometimes at their store, but they're so much better when you eat them there. (Aren't they?)
And yes, definitely check out Global Market. Now. (metered parking)
Sounds neat!!! Oh! Check out my lunch for today! I'm pretty excited about this one! :)
I am excited that the long-awaited Global Market is open. I have driven by there several times and it was looking so nice. I'll check it out!

How exciting! It sounds a bit like the old Farmer’s Market in LA at Fairfax and 3rd only much newer of course..lol. I grew up just across the river in Hudson, WI. I told my aunt in Mendota Heights about the new TJ’s in the area. I love that place, I can’t stop raving about it to everyone.
Shananigans, I wonder if that's the same Farmers' Market in LA that my sister took me to some years ago... I thought it was a really cool place.
You have an aunt in Mendota Heights? We're in Eagan. I'm sure you know where that is.
Of course I know Eagan. :) Back in my college days I worked a summer at an office off Pilot Knob Rd. My dad is from St. Paul so I have a lot of family around the twin cities.
