More of that Filipino stuff
There are a few things I purpose to do but haven't quite put my whole heart to them yet, so I decided to take a blogging break again. I've figured, if I catch up on favorite blogs 2 or 3 times a week, I'd be alright! I also plan to update mine once a week.Having said that, here's the cassava suman Aliyah and I made last week. She blogged about it, so if you're curious, check it out.
We've been gulping up smoothies and sorbets lately. Here's a favorite: mangoes, pineapples, banana and fresh squeezed orange juice. No sweetener needed. We usually use soymilk in the colder months, but a juice base seems to be a better choice in warmer days. We also have frozen peaches on standby.Frozen fruits work out for me, otherwise, I know I'd keep procrastinating. So we keep a freezer full of them!

A peek inside a papaya. This takes me way back home where we would pick papayas from the trees and eat them right on the spot. I also remember my older sisters picking them while still green to make atchara or pickled papaya. I was always ready to extend a helping hand when it came to grating them.
Simple dishes seem to work out for us better than complicated meals. Here I just sauteed fresh green beans with garlic, onion, a few tomatoes, mung bean sprouts and veggie broth, seasoned with light soy sauce and freshly ground pepper.
Below is my veganized version of a Filipino breakfast eat that my family enjoyed before we gave up eggs. Only, this is much better!
2-3 garlic cloves, minced
1 yellow onion, chopped
3 medium tomatoes, chopped
1 block extra-firm tofu, pressed and cubed
cilantro or green onions, chopped, to garnish
Sautee the garlic until light brown. Add the onion and sautee until translucent. Add the tomatoes and cook for 2-3 minutes. Add the tofu and sautee for a few minutes. Finish with a garnish of chopped cilantros, or green onions, or both.
This is good with sinangag, which is Filipino-style fried rice with lots of browned garlic and seasoned with either salt or soy sauce and optional ground pepper. Keep in mind that browning the garlic before adding the other ingredients makes these dishes distinctly Filipino.

I have never had or even hear of cassava before I saw it in your post. Well...unless Crystal has told me about it and I forgot. ;) It looks interesting and good. Another food to add to the growing list of things I need to try. I used to be a very picky eater.
I love smoothies for breakfast. They are so easy to make. We will have to start putting ours in glasses like yours rather than plastic cups to see the vibrant colors. I like your fruit arragement in around the smoothie in the picture.

Those dishes look so delicious and so perfect for summer. What a feast you could create from the above items. They make me think of peacefully lounging on a semi-deserted island.
Awesome pics as usual! Papaya...yum! It's so strange with fruits these days! With me anyway...I am not fond of but will still force myself to eat dried papaya but LOVE papaya juice...as I just found out! I LOVE fresh mangoes but am not too fond of dried. I love dried apricots more than fresh. I HATE Bananas! Always have! Maybe I would like them dried...who knows! Maybe I'll get daring one of these days...but not today.
:)
A break from blogging...I'll miss ya...but KNOW it has to be done from time to time. Best of luck on getting those tasks accomplished!
Ryan, thanks.
I get frozen grated cassava from the asian market. The taste and texture after it is steamed is nothing like anything I've tasted.
Cindy, wow, thanks!
Harmonia, thanks.
I, too, don't like the dried mangoes here. Blaaahh...
But if you can, try them from the Asian Market, particularly the ones from the Philippines.
I love smoothies too, I always keep my freezer stocked with frozen berries. I haven’t seen that TJ’s whole wheat pizza dough that you mentioned in your last post, but I’m headed there tonight to pick up some traveling munchies so I may have a look for it. I usually make my own pizza dough, but that would be a nice quick alternative if I didn’t feel like taking the extra time and getting my hands all doughy.
Smoothies, yes! Papaya, yes! And I must try your green bean dish. I'm always looking for new ways to prepare them. Thanks for the inspiration!
I love the Trader Joe's pizza dough too, so handy! It's kinda flat but totally fits the bill sometimes. I buy the herb and garlic one every now and then for breadsticks~
The pomegranate vinegar sounds perfect for the pasta salad - I've been eyeing the pomegranate glaze at TJ's too.
Exactly, Shananigans. I know my kids would be eating more pizza if I don't always have to make the dough. Nice break from "dough-i-ness"!
The smoothie looks so good!
Your food looks great. I hope you have time to still take food photos, even if you are taking a break. Great post!
Leslie, whoa, I just got back from your blog!
Thanks. I'll still take photos, otherwise my family would wonder. They always ask me when I don't!
everything look so beautiful! I wish I liked papaya....it is SO pretty!
I'm big on frozen fruits too. I even freeze my own sometimes b/c i know i won't have time to eat them before they go bad.
I know what you mean by food bringng back great memories. I really want to go back to the asian pacific b/c i miss the food. You can't get it here- just not the same.
I like the cassava suman, it looks great. Thanks for the post : )!

That Filipino stuff looks awesome! and I like the story about when you were little picking papayas.
The cassava suma looks so cool! And Papaya? Want to be my mom? lol.
That fruit looks fabulous.. When I was a little girl Papaya was my favorite food.
I love the tofu dish too.. Yum!
Kai
I have to admit
I'm missin you!

Fruit is so wonderful and my that papaya looks splendid, truly!
Smoothies are one of life's best drinks... water, too, of course.
