Barely COOKIng
These are Dreena's Coconut Lime Cookies from VLV. My kids seem to really enjoy the idea of baking contests that we have been doing them more often than I would like. One time, it was between the oldest and her best friend, another, with little sister, and today, with a playmate. A new trend in our house has begun: Iron Cookie Chef, Jr. edition. Sigh.

I just had to share this with you folks!
And she did get some attention from mall-goers.

What is Zurielle's favorite thing to eat at buffet restaurants?
You guess it...
Speaking of buffets, I have been thinking lately about how we casually regard, and maybe favor, their existence. Have you ever been to a buffet restaurant right before closing time? Have you ever seen how much food gets wasted at the end of the day?Provided they have to do the same thing at a regular restaurant, I still think it's insane! Especially for someone who grew up in a third world country.
Okay, I'm starting to get offtrack here so I'll just see you next week with... hopefully... more food!

Hi Kai, welcome back again! Your cuties made my night - and i'm not talkin' cookies, tho those look groovy and with lime, you can't go wrong.
And yes, i have been to buffet restaurants to see the "aftermath" as well as non-buffet restaurants... it's truly mind-numbing what goes to waste.
Every week, a friend of mine who does my taxes gets a delivery of day-old/week-old bread from various bakeries and she doles the breadstuffs out to friends (including me on occasion) who are instructed to take it to homeless shelters and various other agencies who serve - and will serve the goodies to - others.
It makes me wonder why it's not done with all other food! Other than a contamination factor (which would be negligible for most non-animal foods), it seems a no-brainer...
Good post and i like your off-track mind on this subject. I didn't grow up in a third world country, but i can certainly can see the insanity of wastefulness!
I hear you on the waste issue of buffets. I'm not a huge fan of buffets...I find they usually focus on quantity, not quality. There are a few exceptions..like an amazing indian veggie buffet near my work.
Cookies look great.. I really can't wait to try those.. I've been waiting til my next big baking day to do so.
I hear you about the waste. It is hard to think about how much food goes to waste when there are so many hungry people.
Little food and little kids = one great post!
I like it when you share your family with us. :)

Yay your back. Your kiddies are adorable, as always. What a mouthfull! As for throwing away food, it drives me crazy too. I'm glad to see you back. See ya next week.
One of my jobs is in the food service industry and it makes me nuts how casually food is thrown away! We're even allotted a certain percentage for waste. Just because we have, doesn't mean we can be wasteful. We used to participate in a school breakfast program and give away day old bagels, muffins, etc. but for some reason, that was stopped. Now the employees take some things home.
On a happier note, your cookies and your girls both look gorgeous! I love the little one with the orange. Priceless!
I do think about how much food gets wasted, and it makes me mad. Anytime you're in the food industry or dealing with food, so much gets wasted, but it doesn't have to be that way. For instance, can you imagine how much stuff got wasted at the health food store my sister works at before she started working there? It makes me really sad. Also, another thing I don't like about buffets is the idea of having to eat your money's worth. People stuff themselves silly like they're never going to get food again. That's just my opinion though.
IT's the heat that does turn you away from the kitchen! Here it is so hot I can hadrly keep the computer on because I am scared the itnernal fan will blow!
As for restaurant leftover, *some* do send the food to pauper canteens: I volunteer regularly at one and that is a main source of provisioning. Others, send food to animal shelters.
And then most goes wasted. A big problem, especially in the US where people on average already consume 10 times the amount of water of an european daily! Land of freedom = land of waste?
Hey, Kai!!
Welcome back!!
Your cookies look awesome and your daughter is waaaayyy cute!!!
"Iron Cookie Chef, Jr." - I love it! :) My siblings and I used to put on cooking shows for my parents, and often would video tape ourselves. Mind you, our cooking shows didn't necessarily need to include actual food - especially if we were camping. Anything that could be cut up and mixed in a pot - think sticks, mud, flowers, leaves - were part of our masterpiece recipes!! :)
Those cookies look GREAT!
I've worked in two different restaurants, one being a buffet style. And yes, it's sickening. There are homeless people all over the place in Athens, while restaurants just throw food away--a lot of it perfectly good still. I don't know how to fight it. Panera Bread donates its day-old bread to the homeless shelter, which is comforting to me, at least.
On a lighter note, I love that orange grin!
I'm shuddering just thinking about buffet food. Never cared for it.
Cute, cute, cute pictures :)

Miss you and your posts but LOVE the kids pics! The cookies are good looking too! I went to a buffet last night and thought the same thing!
wonderful photos as always. The lime cookies look so good.
We have a buffet that donates all the days left overs to their employees first and then to the homeless shelters in town.
They are from China and understand the importance of not wasting food
It is sad how much food gets wasted. I know some restaurants used to take their leftovers to homeless shelters, but a couple got sued when some of the homeless patrons got sick from the food and stopped doing it. It seems there is no winning sometimes.
On a lighter note, thanks for the birthday wish, I had a great day.
how cute is she?
cookies look great. welcome back.

Everyone’s been making those coconut lime cookies! I bet they’re great. That picture of Zurielle with the orange in her mouth is so cute. I used to love showing off an “orange smile” whenever we had orange slices for lunch or snacks when I was a kid. Look forward to more food posts soon!
