My Top 5 Favorite Food Pick

Teddy of Fun With Your Food tagged me for my Top 5 list. Well, who doesn't know what list I'm talking about? Awesome...she actually got me to post!

JACKFRUITS
I still remember sitting on the bamboo floor while with greasy hands we would pick the golden edible parts of the fruit from the spread of banana leaves...

Jackfruit is mostly grown in Asia and Brazil. Though the canned version, which is available in Asian markets, is nothing like the fresh fruit, I still think it is worth your try.

FRESH YOUNG COCONUT
The flesh with the juice... nothing like it! Try it as a drink (or popsicle!) with added sugar and it is beyond words.

CASSAVA
I could say much about these roots, but here's Wikipedia for you.

SUMAN (Sticky Rice Wrapped in Banana Leaves)
The photo is of the grated cassava instead of the sticky or glutinous rice, but you get the picture. The cassava version is as exotic as good anyway.

Young (unripe) Jackfruit in Coconut Milk would have been my #5, but since I already have the fruit on the list, I went with...

BANANA BLOSSOMS IN COCONUT MILK

Here's one of the recipes I found online.

I have seen fresh banana blossoms at Asian markets, but have never been that adventurous as to tackle it myself. They do have the canned version as well, but naturally, it would be an inferior replacement.

Most likely you have posted your own Top 5, but if not, I tag you!

Kai, first off it's good to see you post, even if you were forced to!

Secondly, what a list! I LOVE IT! Such awesome unique (to me) foods and your favorites definetly show your roots. Didn't you post about the banana leaves before? I love this list, thanks for the added photos.

Leslie, it was interesting coming up with this list and finding the photos to go with it was half the fun.

Yes, I posted about banana leaves before and that photo of the cassava suman was from when I made it with Aliyah.

I gravitate toward this list because these food seem to be such "special treats" to me being that they are not so available.

Otherwise, my list would have included things like mangoes, cilantro, and guess what?

Cumin. And oh yeah, soy ice cream! (No kiddin!)

Kai, your roots are showing! :o) And what wonderful roots you have. I have yet to try jackfruit, and now i know what will be my next try in the fruit world!

I haven't had fresh coconut in a long time... how much sugar would be good, or perhaps stevia!?

It's fab to see you post. I am so happy you treated us to your top five. Hope your summer's been excellent, Kai!

Hugs to you and your beautiful family from Mattie & me.

I love how unique your list is to everyone elses' lists. I went over to SE Asia last dec./jan. to visit some family and was able to try some jackfruit there. I wanted to try durian since the natives love it, but my family didn't want the smelly fruit in the house so they had me try jackfruit instead. I'm not going to lie- the jackfruit and I did not get along. (But I did love all the other fruit there- longan, mangosteen, rambutan, pomello, the best mangoes...). Anyways, I'd love to try suman and all the other interesting things on your list.

p.s.- I really like all the pictures that you used

Kai, you are giving us a culinary adventure here with your exotic Top 5 list - wow!!!!

... I have never tried these foods (apart from chips made from cassava, and that doesn't really count).

What do you do with / how do you prepare cassava and jackfruit - anything specific/easy that we could try out? I'm intrigued... esp with the cassava root! (because I am assuming it is sort of starchy like potatoes) - do you buy it fresh or frozen?

What an interesting list! I have tried jackfruit chips that they sell in the Asian markets here (Seattle), but I've never had fresh. The chips are really good though! I'll have to try to find some fresh.

I love your exotic picks--esp jackfruit.

I have never tried banana blossoms in coconut milk (though I love anything in coconut milk. I'd like to swim in coconut milk!)

What do they taste like.

Learnt something new :)

Never heard of jackfruits or even seen them tinned and never knew you could eat banana flowers even when I lived in areas which were big banana producers.

hi.
i really like cassava. i also enjoy a special version of it, which is usually called naiboa, that is two cassava cakes arranged as a sandwich and filled up on cane sugar paste. it's pretty nice.
and i have a litle to say about coconut too; where i live they make this kind ok milk shake, but using coconut flesh and its water (and no cow milk), sugar, and then top it with powdered cinnamon, and they call it cocada.

by the way, i like your blog =)
